As the Vice President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) chapter at St. Edward’s University, 2016 Chinquapin alum Alejandro Izaguirre has the chance to meet people of all backgrounds. But even he was surprised at the outcome of a recent meeting with Texas State Representative Eric Johnson.
Johnson’s office emailed LULAC, asking a few representatives to meet with Johnson, the founder of the Young Texans Legislative Caucus. “Throughout the meeting, we talked about our professional and educational goals as well as what Rep. Johnson wanted to see from us as students. His goal is to have more young leaders involved in public service and is trying to achieve this through the Young Texans Legislative Caucus. He encouraged us to eventually think about running for office.”
After the meeting, an impressed Izaguirre asked Rep Johnson if there were any internship positions available at his office. Johnson told him he’d look into it — and when Izaguirre followed up with Johnson’s Chief of Staff, she relayed the message that Johnson had given the green light, “so you start on Monday.” Wow!
Says Izaguirre: “So far, I’ve been working on bill analysis and compiling witness lists. In the coming weeks, I’ll be sitting in on senate hearings and taking notes.”
We love to see our alumni taking initiative and getting involved. Congratulations, Alejandro!
